first theme

A while back, I bravely foolishly said I would only change the theme on this blog if I made it myself. Didn’t stick to that promise at all. However I am genuinely interested in making themes, and decided to get my feet wet by converting a CSS/XHTML theme to use in WordPress.
The inspiration came from this wonderful article at limpag.com about this exact topic. Keen as mustard, I set about finding a nice theme, and stumbled upon the CoolWater theme from over at styleshout.com. I set about it and about 30 minutes into the project I thought maybe I should make sure I am not re-inventing the wheel. Well I was, kind of. There are a few CoolWater WordPress themes out there, but one of those that I downloaded actually appeared to have a virus in the footer template. Other versions I looked at all differed in some way, so I continued on my path to discovery.
I can only say that it is a fascinating way to understand the workings of WordPress. I faffed around for about 6 hours working on it, in time and with practise I can probably knock out a conversion in an evening. To make it easier to view, I installed WP in a subdirectory and added a theme-switcher plugin and a php-friendly widget to automate things a bit!
So I present to you my first attempt, I would love feedback, be it harsh or kind, I have a lot to learn!
